When We Get Together… Workbook
With the When We Get Together... Workbook, we invite you to explore what spirituality means to you. Through the When We Get Together to Talk About God… project, we have interviewed South Floridians from Opa-Locka, Little Haiti, Liberty City, and more about their own practices. When We Get Together to Talk About God… has given us an opportunity to understand our ancestral practices, recognize the elements of spirituality all around us, and commune spiritually with members of our community. In those conversations, we have learned about garden remedies, indigo printing, lineage research, and embodying the movements of our ancestors through dance and hearing their music through drumbeats.
Whether we are from Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba, Antigua, Brazil, Ghana, Nicaragua, the Bahamas, Honduras, Benin, or Nigeria, we have discovered commonalities in our spiritual histories and rituals. Still, we honor the ways we are different, too.
While these conversations forged connections, they also encouraged us to look deeply into our own practices, rituals, and ancestry. We hope you use the When We Get Together… Workbook to excavate your own spiritual lineage and practices.
This work may lead to even more questions, so you can also use these questions to guide conversations with your uncle, your grandma, a community leader, friend, or even the Orishas and your ancestors.
Like us, you may find that spirituality is deeper and more far-reaching in your world than you ever knew. Let this work connect you to your own ancestral practices, spiritualities, and each other.
